Hunter, I have to ask, what makes you vote Tory if you're defence? Other than the fact that the Tories crime bills will inevitably send you more business!

I'm not very socially conservative.  For example, I have no problem with gay marriage.  I generally vote for the Tories because:

a.  I'm very fiscally conservative.  I've spent my whole adult life running my own business (I tell myself successfully).  If provinces want more robust social programs, they can raise the revenue provincially.  I think it would be very tempting to remove revenue from one area of the country (that isn't likely to support you) and use it to buy votes in another area.
b.  I'm OK with serious violent offenders being incarcerated.  In fact, in many cases I've seen people get rehabilitated in federal pens.
c.  I am violently against the gun registry.  It penalizes law abiding, tax paying, honest citizens.  It is imposed on rural Canada in an attempt to make down-town Toronto feel safer.  It is evil, evil, EVIL!!!!
d.  The Liberals (literally) stole tax dollars, and I'm thinking of the Sponsorship/Gomery issue.  I can actually live with a bit of low level nepotism, flunky-ism, etc, but the whole "let's transfer cash" in brown paper bags really bothered me.
e.  I suspect that the Liberals (unlike the other 3 parties) believe in nothing other than the fact that they should be in power.  For example, if they thought that throwing western Canada under a bus would win an election, I suspect that they would do it a second.  The NDP (left), Tories (right) and the Block (sp?)(Quebec Partisanship/Separation) have several core values that they not only express, but are less likely to sell out.  I respect this position more than that of the Liberals.
f.  I don't think that tax dollars should be used to fund election campaigns.  I don't agree with the $2 per vote rule, or whatever it is.

Of course, I don't like everything the Tories are doing.  For example, while putting people in jail for serious crimes is generally a good thing, you have to be willing to spend more money on in-custody rehabilitation, which I doubt they will do.  I also don't agree with all of their crime bills, specifically the ETC rules, but that's why we have courts and a constitution.

As Mr. Spock would say, they are the only logical choice.
