When I moved to another province I spoke with the Client Centre to have my status changed. I expressed my frustration that, even if I wasn't practicing in Ontario, I was still on the hook for 50% of my dues so long as I was working somewhere. $950 per year for the privilege of not practicing law in Ontario? It's a rip off, and there is absolutely no reason why they should be collecting that amount of money from people that aren't working in the province.

Anyways, the rep I was speaking to suggested that I simply not pay them and let myself be administratively suspended. I couldn't tell if it was sarcasm or not, but it seems like some people took them up on the offer. I considered it, but then realized that I didn't want my name showing up on this sort of list, causing former classmates to wonder what I got "caught" doing.

Yeah. I went through something similar and find having to pay the $80 a month for nothing (although I did get the ORs) to be a but much. I don't know what you did in the end, but I can't say I am thrilled with the "licence surrendered" that appears next to my name now. I wish there was a lower cost option, something that covers the bare costs of getting the ORs and basic admin, you know, $200-$300 a year sounds fair.
