A lot of people seem to believe that their debts will fall on their children if they die destitute. Heck, as long as assets are not held jointly, spouses(married or common law) aren't on the hook for their mate's debts either, are they?

As far as I know, your debts are yours alone, absent a guarantor arrangement. If there is a right of survivorship then the property never forms part of your estate, so it can't be used to pay off any debts. If there is no right of survivorship, I guess the estate would still hold those assets, which could mean a creditor could try and realize against them.... but who wants a fractional interest in something?
